The Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in New York participated in the ceremony of 'Giorno della Memoria'

New York, January 29th, 2024

The Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in New York, Vladimir Bozovic, participated in the traditional public reading of the names of Jewish people who were deported from Italy and other territories under Italian command during the fascist dictatorship of Benito Mussolini.

The ceremony, titled 'Giorno della Memoria,' started with a traditional Jewish prayer, and took place in front of the Italian Consulate in New York. Bozovic, along with other participants, including a large number of diplomats from other countries such as Consuls General of Germany and France, read some of the names of Jews who experienced tragic fates during the war years of the twentieth century. Additionally, Giorno della Memoria commemorates the day of 1945 in which Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Army. European countries and the United Nations observe this day with a variety of programs and ceremonies organized to create awareness about this challenging period in history, foster social dialogue, and counter racism, discrimination, intolerance and xenophobia in today's societies.

Prior to the event, Bozovic was on an official visit to the Consul General of Italy in New York, Fabrizio di Michele, who officially invited him to participate in the 'Giorno della Memoria' ceremony.

After the conclusion of the ceremony, Bozovic informally engaged in conversations with several diplomats present and subsequently held an official meeting with the Consul General of Canada in New York, Tom Clark. During the meeting, Clark expressed gratitude for the significant contribution of the Serbian diaspora to the development of modern-day Canada, stating that he believes it is essential to enhance relations between the two countries on all levels, not just among major cities. Clark and Bozovic discussed international political developments, agreeing that the defense of liberal democracy would be a priority for all modern societies in the next decade. The two consuls exchanged experiences in diplomatic service and committed to mutual support in future activities of the consulates of Serbia and Canada in New York.
